The Ultimate Kona, Hawaii Woman’s Packing List

If you’re dreaming of a laid-back, sun-soaked getaway to Kona, Hawaii, I’ve got you covered. I’ve spent a lot of time on the Big Island (my Airbnb Kona Landing is right on Ali’i Drive), and I know how easy it is to overpack and still feel like you have nothing to wear. That’s why I created this guide.

Each outfit idea is designed to match the actual experiences you’ll have in Kona—from lazy beach days to volcano hikes to golden hour dinners. Let’s pack.

Kona Beach Day Look

Nothing beats a beach day in Kona—whether you’re snorkeling with turtles, lounging at Magic Sands Beach, or relaxing in front of my rental, Kona Landing. I always go for a functional swimsuit, an easy cover-up, and accessories that can handle the sun and salt. Check out my Big Island, Hawaii beaches guide for my must-visit beaches.

Big Island Explorer Look

If you’re planning to drive the full loop around the island in one day (yes, it’s possible), you’ll want a breathable outfit and layers. Expect stops at black sand beaches, coffee farms, and Volcano National Park. For inspiration, use my Driving Around the Big Island in One Day and Volcano National Park guides.

Kona, Hawaii Golden Hour Dinner Look

After a day of sunshine, there’s nothing better than a sunset dinner in Kona. Whether you're at a beachfront bar or a fine dining spot, this outfit is easy and elevated. Use my Kona Hawaii restaurants and Kona Hawaii happy hour guides to plan where you’ll go.

Hawaii Hiking + Tour Look

If you're heading to the jungle, lava tubes, or waterfall trails, you need to stay cool, sun-safe, and comfortable. See trail recommendations in my Big Island Hawaii hiking and Big Island Hawaii tours posts.

Kona Farmer’s Market Look

If you're strolling the Kona Farmers Market or exploring free activities, this look is cute and casual. For itinerary inspiration, check out my list of free things to do in Kona, Hawaii.

How to Pack for a Stress-Free Kona Vacation

Here’s how I pack so I don’t overthink it:

  1. Group by Outfit Category: Pack each outfit together (I roll them) and put it in a cube so it’s grab-and-go.

  2. Use Packing Cubes: For anything that’s not in an outfit, use cubes to keep organized. I pull my cubes out and put them directly into a dresser.

  3. Plan for No Laundry: Bring enough underwear, swimsuits, and coverups for each day. It’s hot in Kona, and you will sweat, so re-wearing items is not always an option.

  4. Carry-On Essentials: Always include one beach day outfit in case your bag gets delayed.

  5. Use a Laundry Bag: Keeps your stuff organized and makes the trip home easier.
